1. WHO WE ARE

MattReading (“MattReading,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) operates https://mattreadingtranslations.com and its related pages, features, accounts, and services (collectively, the “Site”).

For data-protection purposes, MattReading is the controller of personal information processed for its own purposes.

Data controller: MattReading
Privacy email: MattReading89@protonmail.com

This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how and why we use it, when we disclose it, how long we retain it, and the choices and rights available to you.

2. SCOPE

This Privacy Policy applies when you:

  • Visit or use the Site;
  • Create or use an account;
  • Read, submit, or interact with comments;
  • Sign in through or connect a Patreon account;
  • Access content associated with a Patreon membership level;
  • Contact us, report an issue, or provide feedback;
  • Interact with analytics, advertising, or similar technologies used on the Site; or
  • Submit a privacy request.

This Privacy Policy does not govern websites and services operated independently by third parties, such as Patreon, Discord, Google, or an advertiser’s website. Those services process information under their own privacy policies.

3. INFORMATION WE COLLECT

3.1 Information You Provide

Depending on how you use the Site, you may provide:

  • Account information, such as a username, display name, email address, and account preferences;
  • Authentication and membership information associated with a connected Patreon account;
  • Comments and other material you choose to publish;
  • Messages, support requests, issue reports, and feedback;
  • Information included in a privacy-rights request; and
  • Cookie, advertising, and privacy choices.

Comments and other content submitted for public display may be visible to anyone and may be indexed by search engines. Do not include sensitive or confidential information in public comments.

3.2 Information Collected Automatically

When you use the Site, we and our service providers may automatically collect:

  • Internet Protocol (IP) address;
  • Approximate location derived from an IP address, such as country, region, or city;
  • Browser type and version, device type, operating system, language, and screen characteristics;
  • Referring and destination pages or URLs;
  • Pages and chapters viewed, timestamps, time spent, navigation paths, and interactions;
  • Advertising information, such as ad requests, impressions, approximate viewability, interactions, and frequency information;
  • Cookie identifiers, advertising identifiers, pseudonymous identifiers, and similar online identifiers;
  • Consent and privacy-preference signals;
  • Account, login, and access-control events; and
  • Diagnostic, security, fraud-prevention, and error information.

3.3 Information Received From Third Parties

We may receive information from:

  • Patreon, such as an account identifier, display information, membership status, and membership tier, when you connect Patreon to the Site;
  • Analytics providers, including aggregated and device-level usage information;
  • Advertising providers and programmatic advertising participants, including information concerning ad delivery, consent, fraud prevention, and pseudonymous audience or device identifiers;
  • Hosting, security, content-delivery, and WordPress service providers; and
  • Publicly available sources or people who contact us about suspected abuse, infringement, or security incidents.

Patreon processes payments. We do not receive or store your complete payment-card number or Patreon password.

3.4 Sensitive Personal Information

We do not intentionally request sensitive personal information such as government identification numbers, precise geolocation, health information, biometric information, financial-account credentials, racial or ethnic origin, religious beliefs, or sexual orientation. Please do not provide sensitive personal information through comments or ordinary communications.

4. HOW WE USE INFORMATION AND OUR LEGAL BASES

We process personal information only when we have an appropriate purpose and legal basis. Depending on the circumstances and applicable law, we use information to:

  • Provide the Site, accounts, comments, and requested content;
  • Authenticate users and apply Patreon membership access levels;
  • Respond to questions, feedback, issue reports, and privacy requests;
  • Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and improve the Site;
  • Measure readership, traffic, performance, and engagement;
  • Serve contextual advertising;
  • Serve personalized or interest-based advertising when permitted and when any required consent has been obtained;
  • Measure advertising delivery, frequency, viewability, and effectiveness;
  • Detect, prevent, and investigate spam, fraud, invalid traffic, abuse, security threats, and violations of our terms;
  • Establish, exercise, or defend legal claims and protect our rights and the rights of others;
  • Comply with legal, regulatory, tax, accounting, and contractual obligations; and
  • Record and honor consent, opt-out, and privacy choices.

Where the GDPR, UK GDPR, or similar law applies, our legal bases may include:

  • Contract: processing needed to provide an account, requested service, or membership-based access;
  • Legitimate interests: operating and securing the Site, understanding aggregate readership, preventing abuse, maintaining records, and serving contextual advertising, provided those interests are not overridden by your rights;
  • Consent: non-essential cookies, analytics storage, personalized advertising, advertising-user data, or other processing for which consent is legally required; and
  • Legal obligation: processing needed to comply with applicable law.

Where Brazil’s Lei Geral de Protecao de Dados Pessoais (LGPD) applies, our legal bases may include consent, performance of a contract or preliminary procedures requested by you, compliance with a legal or regulatory obligation, the regular exercise of rights, and legitimate interests subject to applicable safeguards.

You may withdraw consent at any time. Withdrawal does not affect processing that was lawful before withdrawal. You can change cookie and advertising choices through the “Privacy Choices” link in the Site footer.

5. COOKIES AND SIMILAR TECHNOLOGIES

We and our partners may use cookies, local storage, pixels, tags, web beacons, scripts, and similar technologies. These technologies may be first-party, meaning set by the Site, or third-party, meaning set or accessed by another service.

We use the following general categories:

  • Strictly necessary technologies: required for security, authentication, network management, consent records, Patreon access controls, and basic Site operation;
  • Preference technologies: remember settings and choices;
  • Analytics technologies: help us understand traffic, readership, performance, and Site usage; and
  • Advertising technologies: request, select, deliver, measure, limit, and personalize advertising, and detect fraud or invalid traffic.

Where consent is legally required, non-essential technologies are not activated until an appropriate choice has been made. Our consent mechanism communicates relevant choices to participating advertising and analytics providers. You may later change or withdraw those choices through the “Privacy Choices” link in the footer.

Browser controls may allow you to delete or block cookies. Blocking all cookies may prevent authentication, membership recognition, preferences, comments, or other Site features from working correctly.

6. ANALYTICS

We use Google Analytics and may use other analytics services to understand how the Site is used. These services may process IP addresses, device and browser information, pages viewed, referring pages, timestamps, approximate location, and pseudonymous identifiers.

Google explains how it uses information from sites that use its services at:
https://policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites

Google’s privacy policy is available at:
https://policies.google.com/privacy

Where required, analytics storage is controlled through our consent mechanism. Google also provides an Analytics opt-out browser add-on at:
https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout

7. ADVERTISING AND PROGRAMMATIC ADVERTISING

The Site is supported in part by advertising. We work with Monumetric and advertising technology providers that may include Google Ad Manager, Google AdSense, supply-side platforms, demand-side platforms, advertising exchanges, measurement providers, fraud-prevention services, and identity or matching providers.

Advertising partners may process information such as:

  • IP address and approximate location;
  • Browser, device, operating-system, and language information;
  • Pages or content viewed;
  • Ad requests, impressions, interactions, viewability, and frequency information;
  • Cookie IDs, mobile or browser advertising identifiers, and other pseudonymous identifiers;
  • Consent, opt-out, and regional privacy signals; and
  • Information used to detect fraud, abuse, bots, and invalid traffic.

Depending on the advertising configuration, applicable law, and your choices, Monumetric or its partners may use pseudonymous identity solutions. These may involve matching identifiers or hashed information, such as a hashed email address, for advertising, measurement, frequency control, or cross-device recognition. Such processing must be subject to the consent and opt-out choices required by applicable law.

Advertising technology providers used through Monumetric may include LiveRamp, ID5, PubMatic, Sovrn, The Trade Desk, and other participants disclosed through the Site’s consent interface or Monumetric’s current partner disclosures. The active list can change as advertising providers enter or leave the auction.

Monumetric’s advertising privacy information is available at:
https://www.monumetric.com/publisher-advertising-privacy

Google advertising controls are available at:
https://myadcenter.google.com/

Industry opt-out tools are available at:
https://optout.networkadvertising.org/
https://optout.aboutads.info/

We do not sell personal information for money. However, some US privacy laws may define the disclosure of identifiers or online activity for cross-context behavioral advertising as a “sale,” “sharing,” or “targeted advertising.” Where applicable, you may opt out through the “Privacy Choices” or “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” link in the Site footer. Opting out of personalized advertising does not eliminate advertising; it generally results in contextual or less personalized advertising.

8. GLOBAL PRIVACY CONTROL AND REGIONAL PRIVACY SIGNALS

Where required by applicable law, we treat a recognized Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal as a request to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information and targeted advertising for the browser or device sending the signal.

Our consent and advertising systems may use industry frameworks such as the IAB Europe Transparency and Consent Framework and the IAB Global Privacy Platform to communicate privacy choices to participating providers. These signals do not replace your ability to contact us directly.

Because ordinary “Do Not Track” browser signals do not have a single universally accepted legal or technical meaning, the Site may not respond to them unless required by applicable law. This does not affect our handling of recognized GPC signals or choices submitted through our privacy controls.

9. PATREON, ACCOUNTS, AND EXTERNAL SERVICES

If you connect a Patreon account, Patreon authenticates you and may provide the Site with information needed to recognize your account and membership tier. We use this information to provide the corresponding access level, maintain security, and troubleshoot access issues.

Patreon independently controls information it collects for payments, membership administration, and its own services. Patreon privacy information is available at:
https://privacy.patreon.com/

The Site may link to Discord, authors, publishers, social platforms, advertisers, and other external services. Clicking a third-party link may allow that service to receive information such as your IP address and the page from which you arrived. Review the third party’s privacy policy before providing information to it.

10. WHEN WE DISCLOSE INFORMATION

We may disclose personal information to:

  • Hosting, content-delivery, security, email, authentication, WordPress, technical-support, and infrastructure providers that help operate the Site;
  • Patreon when needed for authentication and membership-related access;
  • Analytics providers used to measure and improve the Site;
  • Monumetric, Google, and other advertising technology providers for advertising, measurement, frequency control, consent signaling, and fraud prevention;
  • Professional advisers, such as legal, accounting, insurance, or security advisers, when reasonably necessary;
  • Government authorities, courts, law enforcement, or other parties when disclosure is required by law or reasonably necessary to protect rights, safety, security, and legal claims;
  • A buyer, successor, or adviser in connection with a proposed or completed merger, acquisition, financing, restructuring, bankruptcy, or transfer of Site assets, subject to appropriate confidentiality and legal safeguards; and
  • Other parties when you direct us to disclose information or provide valid consent.

Service providers acting on our behalf are authorized to process information only for the relevant service and subject to appropriate contractual or legal obligations. Some advertising participants may act as independent controllers for their own processing, as explained in their respective privacy notices.

11. INTERNATIONAL DATA TRANSFERS

The Site and its providers operate internationally. Personal information may be processed in countries other than the country where you live, including the United States and other jurisdictions whose privacy laws may differ from yours.

Where required, international transfers are supported by an applicable legal mechanism, such as an adequacy decision, contractual protections including standard contractual clauses, or another lawful transfer mechanism. We also require appropriate technical and organizational safeguards where applicable.

You may contact us for additional information about transfer safeguards relevant to information controlled by MattReading. Advertising and other independent providers should be contacted directly regarding safeguards for processing they control.

12. DATA RETENTION

We retain personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy, including to provide the Site, maintain membership access, protect security, honor privacy choices, resolve disputes, enforce agreements, and comply with legal obligations.

Retention is determined using criteria such as:

  • How long an account remains active or the information is needed to provide a requested service;
  • The nature and sensitivity of the information;
  • Security, fraud, abuse-prevention, and troubleshooting needs;
  • Applicable limitation periods and the likelihood of a dispute;
  • Legal, regulatory, accounting, and contractual requirements; and
  • Whether information can be deleted, aggregated, or de-identified instead of retained in identifiable form.

Public comments may remain available until they or the associated content are removed, subject to moderation, legal obligations, and backup cycles. Consent and opt-out records may be retained as necessary to demonstrate compliance and continue honoring your choices. Aggregated or de-identified information that can no longer reasonably identify you may be retained for analytics, security, and statistical purposes.

Third-party providers determine their own retention periods for information they control. Refer to their privacy notices and available settings for details.

13. DATA SECURITY

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures designed to protect personal information against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, loss, or destruction. These measures may include access controls, authentication, encryption in transit, software updates, monitoring, backups, and service-provider review.

No website, transmission, or storage system can be guaranteed completely secure. You are responsible for protecting your account credentials and should contact us if you believe your account or information has been compromised.

14. CHILDREN’S PRIVACY

The Site is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Where local law requires a higher age for a person to consent independently to optional data processing, a parent or legal guardian must provide any legally required consent.

If you believe a child has provided personal information in violation of this section, contact us at MattReading89@protonmail.com. We will investigate and delete the information when required.

15. YOUR PRIVACY RIGHTS

Depending on where you live and subject to applicable exceptions, you may have the right to:

  • Confirm whether we process your personal information;
  • Access or obtain a copy of personal information;
  • Correct inaccurate or incomplete information;
  • Delete personal information;
  • Restrict, anonymize, or block certain processing;
  • Object to processing based on legitimate interests;
  • Receive portable information in an appropriate format;
  • Withdraw consent at any time;
  • Opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information, targeted advertising, or certain profiling;
  • Limit certain uses or disclosures of sensitive personal information;
  • Obtain information about the categories of information collected, purposes, sources, recipients, and disclosures;
  • Appeal a refusal to act on a request where applicable;
  • Not be discriminated against for exercising a privacy right; and
  • Lodge a complaint with an applicable data-protection authority.

15.1 EEA, United Kingdom, and Switzerland

Residents may have rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, objection, and withdrawal of consent. You may also complain to the data-protection authority in the country where you live or work or where you believe an infringement occurred.

15.2 Brazil

Under the LGPD, you may have rights including confirmation of processing, access, correction, anonymization, blocking or deletion of unnecessary or unlawfully processed information, portability where regulated, information about sharing and consent choices, withdrawal of consent, review of certain automated decisions where applicable, and petition before Brazil’s Autoridade Nacional de Proteção de Dados (ANPD) or an appropriate consumer-protection body.

15.3 United States

Residents of certain US states may have rights to know or access, correct, delete, and obtain a portable copy of personal information; opt out of sale, sharing, targeted advertising, or certain profiling; limit certain uses of sensitive information; use an authorized agent; appeal certain decisions; and receive equal service without unlawful discrimination.

Where applicable, use the “Privacy Choices” or “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” link in the Site footer to submit an advertising opt-out. We also process recognized GPC signals as described above.

15.4 Exercising Your Rights

To submit a request concerning information controlled by MattReading, email:
MattReading89@protonmail.com

Please state that your message is a “Privacy Request” and describe the right you wish to exercise. We may request information reasonably necessary to verify your identity, identify relevant records, protect against fraudulent requests, and confirm an authorized agent’s authority. We will use verification information only for those purposes.

We will respond within the period required by applicable law. Requests are ordinarily free, although applicable law may permit a reasonable fee or refusal for requests that are manifestly unfounded, excessive, repetitive, or unverifiable. If we deny a request, we will provide the reason and any available appeal instructions when required.

For information controlled independently by Patreon, Monumetric, Google, or another provider, you may need to submit the request directly to that provider.

16. AUTOMATED PROCESSING AND ADVERTISING PROFILES

Advertising providers may use pseudonymous information to select, measure, or limit advertising and may infer general interests for personalized advertising where permitted. MattReading does not use personal information to make automated decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects concerning you.

You may object to or opt out of applicable advertising profiling through the privacy controls described in this Privacy Policy.

17. CHANGES TO THIS PRIVACY POLICY

We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect changes in the Site, providers, technology, law, or our practices. We will post the revised policy on this page and update the “Last Updated” date. If required by law, we will provide additional notice or obtain consent before a material change takes effect.

We encourage you to review this Privacy Policy periodically.

19. Monumetric Advertising Privacy Disclosure

The following disclosure is provided by Monumetric and is reproduced without modification as required under our advertising agreement. It describes Monumetric’s advertising-related data practices and should be read together with the sections above.

20. Monumetric Policy

Monumetric LLC has a partnership agreement with this Site which you linked from for the purposes of placing advertising on the Site. This Advertising Privacy Policy explains how Monumetric uses your data and supersedes any other language on the Site (if any) with respect to the data privacy practices of Monumetric. Monumetric uses industry standard tools for the placement and serving of ads, including those provided by Google, Inc. and its affiliates. We publish interest-based advertisements on this Site; that is, ads that are tailored to reflect your interests. To help make the advertising on the Site you linked from more relevant to you, Monumetric, Google and our other Advertising Partners may track your behavior on this site from which you linked and on other websites across the Internet using cookies.

A cookie is a file containing an identifier (a string of letters and numbers) that is sent by a web server to a web browser and is stored by the browser. The identifier is then sent back to the server each time the browser requests a page from the server. Cookies may be either “persistent” cookies or “session” cookies: a persistent cookie will be stored by a web browser and will remain valid until its set expiry date, unless deleted by the user before the expiry date; a session cookie, on the other hand, will expire at the end of the user session, when the web browser is closed.  Cookies do not typically contain any information that personally identifies a user, but personal information that we store about you may be linked to the information stored in and obtained from cookies.

By using the site from which you linked, you consent to the use of such cookies and the sharing of data captured by such cookies with Monumetric, Google, and our site’s other third party partners. You can view, delete or add interest categories associated with your browser by visiting: https://adssettings.google.com. You can also opt out of the network cookie using those settings or using the Network Advertising Initiative’s multi-cookie opt-out mechanism at: http://optout.networkadvertising.org. However, these opt-out mechanisms themselves use cookies, and if you clear the cookies from your browser your opt-out will not be maintained.

This website uses cookies to:

1) Identify you as a returning user and to count your visits in traffic statistics analysis

2) Remember your custom display preferences (such as whether you prefer comments to display all-collapsed or not)

4) Provide other usability features, including tracking whether you’ve already given your consent to cookies

Enabling cookies is not strictly necessary for the website to work but it will provide you with a better browsing experience. The cookie-related information is not used to identify you personally and is not used for any purpose other than those described here.

There may also be other types of cookies created after you’ve visited this website. This site uses Google Analytics, a popular web analytics service that uses cookies to help to analyze how users use the site. The information generated by the cookie about your use of this website (including your IP address) will be transmitted to and stored by Google on servers in the United States. Google will use this information for the purpose of evaluating your use of other website, compiling reports on website activity, and providing other services relating to website activity and internet usage. Google may also transfer this information to third parties where required to do so by law, or where such third parties process the information on Google’s behalf. Google undertakes not to associate your IP address with any other data held by Google.

Third Party Advertising

This site has third-party advertising companies serving ads to you when you visit. These companies may store information about your visits here and to other websites in order to provide you with relevant advertisements about goods and services. For example, if they know what ads you are shown while visiting this site, they can be careful not to show you the same ones repeatedly.

These companies may employ cookies and other identifiers to gather information which measures advertising effectiveness. The information is generally not personally identifiable unless, for example, you provide personally identifiable information to them through an ad or an email message.

They do not associate your interaction with unaffiliated sites with your identity in providing you with interest-based ads.

This site does not provide any personal information to advertisers or to third party sites. Advertisers and other third parties (including the ad networks, ad-serving companies, and other service providers they may use) may assume that users who interact with or click on a personalized ad or content are part of the group that the ad or content is directed towards (for example, readers in the Pacific Northwest who read certain types of articles). Also, some third-party cookies may provide them with information about you (such as the sites where you have been shown ads or demographic information) from offline and online sources that they may use to provide you more relevant and useful advertising.

To learn more about what options you have about limiting the gathering of information by third-party ad networks, you can consult the website of the Network Advertising Initiative.

You can opt out of participating in interest-based advertising networks but opting out does not mean you will no longer receive online advertising. It does mean that the companies from which you opted out will no longer customize ads based on your interests and web usage patterns using cookie-based technology.

This site does not sell, rent, or disclose to outside parties the information collected here, except as follows:

(a) Affiliated Service Providers: This site has agreements with various affiliated service providers to facilitate the functioning of the site. For example, the site may share your credit card information with the credit card service provider to process your purchase. Additionally, for example, this site may use analytic or marketing services such as Google Analytics or Google Ad Manager or other Advertising Companies to which collection you hereby unconditionally consent.
