I Became the Tyrant of a Defense Game – Chapter 885

Side Story 60. [After Story] Happily Ever After

Imperial Year 653.

One year after the final battle with the monster.

Everblack Empire. Southern Crossroad.

Post-wedding festival.

The wedding ended, and the post-wedding festival began.

It was basically a three-day-long receptionโ€”a never-ending celebration.

Everyone completely let loose, drinking and feasting to their heartโ€™s content.

The city overflowed with people wanting to celebrate the wedding, and throughout the festival, I greeted them one by one and thanked them personally.

โ€œPrince Ash! Noโ€”Crown Prince Ash! No waitโ€”Grand Duke Bringar! Iโ€™m so sorry Iโ€™m late, huuuwaaa!โ€

โ€œItโ€™s fine, Count Valenโ€ฆ Ugh, that stench! How much did you drink?!โ€

โ€œI wanted to represent our Southern City-State Alliance and show off my beautifully regrown mustacheโ€ฆ But I was trimming it and lost track of timeeeeee!โ€

โ€œYou came to congratulate us, thatโ€™s enough. Now get off!โ€

Since guests were arriving from all over the world, a few scheduling errors happened. Some of the heroes and kings missed the actual ceremony and drank themselves silly in regret.

โ€œWhatโ€™s going on here? Why is everyone drinking like theyโ€™re about to die?โ€

โ€œWhen it comes to booze and revelry, us dwarves canโ€™t be left out~.โ€

โ€œHey, Kellibey! Are you running off mid-duel?!โ€

โ€œAlright, alright~! Then letโ€™s do this properlyโ€”each race drinks for honor! Who drops first?!โ€

Naturally, the overdrinking escalated into an inter-race drinking contest. Of course. Why do these people turn everything into a battle the moment they lock eyes?

โ€œWhoโ€™s representing humanity?! You cowardly dogs wonโ€™t dare shy away from honorable combat, will you?!โ€

Verdandi, already wasted, waved her arms wildly, searching for the human representative. I looked around and clicked my tongue.

โ€œโ€ฆWho can handle their liquor? Anyone want to represent humanity?โ€

Even so, we couldnโ€™t just sit back and let our dignity be trampled.

Alright thenโ€”who shall return with Hwaungโ€™s head?

โ€œIโ€™ll go.โ€

A towering figure stepped forward, brimming with reliability.

โ€œIโ€™ve never been drunk in my life.โ€

โ€œOhhh, Torkel! Yes! Iโ€™m counting on youโ€”go!โ€

Torkelโ€™s words were technically trueโ€”he had never been drunk.

Because the man had never drunk alcohol in his life.

So why did he volunteer?!

After one drink, Torkel passed out flat on his back. Zenis was rushed in as a substitute.

โ€œWanna have a drink, son?โ€

โ€œIโ€™d love to, Father!โ€

Zenis began guzzling alcohol alongside Hannibal, representing the Half-Bloods.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€

I broke into a cold sweat as the airโ€™s alcohol density rapidly spiked. Was this okay?

Meanwhile, just a step away from this drink-fueled battlefieldโ€”

King Miller of the Ariane Kingdom and King Kuilan of the Beastkin sat quietly together, sharing drinks.

โ€œHowโ€™s Yun?โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s sleeping well.โ€

โ€œI see.โ€

Miller glanced around, then quietly pulled something from his coat and held it out.

โ€œThis is the item I promised.โ€

โ€œThis isโ€ฆ!โ€

โ€œYes. The blanket Yun always slept with back in her homeland. Sheโ€™s used it since she was very small. Please cover her with it.โ€

โ€œHow adorable. Iโ€™ll make sure to use it.โ€

โ€œAnd thisโ€ฆ is a portrait of Yun as a child. Iโ€™d like you to have it.โ€

โ€œOoooh! What a precious thing!โ€

โ€œWould it be alright if I stop by to see Yun on the way out?โ€

โ€œOf course. Letโ€™s go together.โ€

What a rare and heartwarming sight.

Nearby, on the boulevard lined with food stalls, I spotted Lilly holding Sid, with Damien pushing her wheelchair, followed by Junior and Hecate trotting along behind.

Sid munched happily on cotton candy, and the group strolled along, all of them smiling with snacks in hand. Please, may they stay far away from this chaos.

โ€œAsh!โ€

Just then, a group approached me across the plaza.

It was none other than Mikhailโ€™s five wives.

โ€œHave you seen our husband?!โ€

โ€œPardon? Mikhail, you mean?โ€

โ€œYes! He slipped away during the festival madness and now heโ€™s vanishedโ€ฆ!โ€

Of course, I had no idea where Mikhail went, so I shook my head.

The five wives stormed off in all directions, waving whips and ball gags threateningly in their handsโ€”Wait, what?!

Next came an elderly woman in a refined robe.

โ€œYour Highness the Crown Prince. Have you seen my husband?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆYou mean Dearmudin?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s right. That old fool ran off again during all the chaos. Fufu.โ€

The true master of the Ivory Tower chuckled ominously before vanishing.

โ€œIf he gets caughtโ€ฆ heโ€™s a dead manโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€

I offered a silent prayer for the souls of the escapees. Thatโ€™s when Lucas came rushing toward me.

โ€œMy lord.โ€

โ€œOh, Lucas. How are things?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m doing fine. Butโ€”this way, please.โ€

โ€œHm?โ€

โ€œThere are some people who urgently requested your presence.โ€

Following Lucas, we wound through several alleyways and eventually descended into a shabby underground tavern.

โ€œAh!โ€

The runaways had gathered there.

Mikhail, Dearmudin, and even Chain.

They sat gloomily, nursing their drinks, and I broke into a cold sweat as I approached.

โ€œWhat are you all doing here? Your wives are looking for you.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve finally come, Crown Prince Ash.โ€

Dearmudin downed his drink in one gulp, then signaled me over.

โ€œItโ€™s time I introduced you.โ€

โ€œHuh? Introduce me to what?โ€

The three men glanced at one another, then looked at me and nodded in unison.

โ€œWe areโ€ฆ the Married Menโ€™s Club.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆ?โ€

What sort of shady underground syndicate is this nowโ€ฆ?

Mikhail, looking completely worn out, explained.

โ€œItโ€™s a gathering of married men who fought on the front lines. Now that youโ€™re married, Ash, you qualify to join us.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t exactly want to join, thoughโ€ฆโ€

I asked with clear reluctance.

โ€œWhatโ€™s the purpose of this organization?โ€

โ€œWell, when thereโ€™s a chance like this to meet up, we secretly gather and share a few drinks.โ€

The three married men exchanged bitter smiles.

โ€œTo vent little complaints weโ€™d never dare say directly to our wivesโ€”like shouting into a bamboo forest.โ€

โ€œTo discuss what kind of creative gift will get us brownie points for our next N-th anniversary, or where to take them to eat. We share lists of gifts and restaurants.โ€

โ€œIf someone sneaks in a brand-new Mazana golem toy behind his wifeโ€™s back, we help each other hide it.โ€

W-What kind of tragically meek little brotherhood is thisโ€ฆ?

โ€œDonโ€™t get us wrong. I truly love my wives.โ€

โ€œSame here. My wifeโ€™s an incredibly charming person.โ€

โ€œWe love them. Butโ€ฆโ€

The three of them shuddered at once.

โ€œSometimesโ€ฆ theyโ€™re just terrifyingโ€ฆโ€

I looked to the side and saw Lucas, for some reason, hugging his own shoulders and trembling. Heyโ€”your wedding was literally yesterday! What happened on your first night?!

โ€œโ€ฆโ€

So thisโ€ฆ is the final form of all married men?

Am I headed for this fate too?

โ€œYou donโ€™t have to join us right away. But someday, if you ever feel the need for a place to speak openly among equalsโ€ฆโ€

Dearmudin gave a vague smile and nodded slowly.

โ€œCall on us. Weโ€™ll welcome you gladly.โ€

And just thenโ€”

CRASH!

The tavern door burst open violently.

โ€œYou rascals!โ€

โ€œSo this is where you were hiding!โ€

โ€œSinners, receive your judgmentโ€”!โ€

Mikhailโ€™s, Dearmudinโ€™s, and Chainโ€™s wives stormed in, charging down the stairs in a furious rush.

โ€œDamn, they found us?!โ€

โ€œOut the back door, Ash!โ€

โ€œWeโ€™ll hold them offโ€”go now!โ€

The three men screamed heroically and charged toward their wives.

Why are you pretending this is some noble sacrifice?! Arenโ€™t they just your loving spouses?!

Drunken guests caused incident after incident.

Some found new love in their drunken haze.

Others broke up not long after forming couples, once the alcohol wore off.

Bounties were placed on runaway husbands.

Bounty hunters began chasing married men.

Those men, in turn, bribed the hunters, and a web of silent warfare unfolded in the shadows.

Evangeline accidentally set off the finale fireworks in broad daylight.

Kellibey, proudly claiming heโ€™d handle the recovery, spent the entire afternoon crafting new fireworksโ€”only to trigger a premature detonation and become a flying dwarf.

The exploding firework landed directly on the royal carriage warehouse. Thankfully, the horses had been safely evacuated, but all the brand-new luxury carriages from around the world were scorchedโ€”a major disaster.

Other unspeakable events filled the three-day chaos of this war-like post-wedding festival.

And eventually, it all came to an end.

โ€œUghhhโ€ฆโ€

On the night of the third day, I staggered into my room at the hotel.

Since the top floor suite was reserved for Father, Serenade and I had a room just below. It wasnโ€™t quite a suite, but it was still a fine room.

โ€œWhat aโ€ฆ complete mess of a weddingโ€ฆโ€

Thinking back on the past week made me shudder. Would a day ever come when I could look back on this disaster fondly?

I thought for a moment, then shook my head. No way. Not in this lifetime.

Still grumbling as I walked into the room, I quickly held my breath.

โ€˜Ah.โ€™

Serenade had fallen asleep already.

Had she waited for me, despite the late hour? She was dozing quietly, slumped over the table.

โ€œSorry Iโ€™m late.โ€

I gently brushed Serenadeโ€™s cheek with my fingertips, imagining how long she must have waited.

โ€œYouโ€™re really mine now.โ€

Maybe she heard me in her sleep.

A faint smile formed on Serenadeโ€™s lips.

โ€œReallyโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œYeah. Really.โ€

โ€œHeheโ€ฆโ€

She rubbed her cheek against my hand and drifted back into sleep.

โ€˜She mustโ€™ve been so tired.โ€™

Carefully, I picked up Serenade and laid her on the bed, then pulled a blanket over her.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€

I watched my sleeping wifeโ€™s face for a long while before quietly moving to the back window.

Below the large window that looked out over Crossroad, there was a cushion. I sat there, gazing out in silence.

The view outside the window never stayed stillโ€”it shifted constantly.

City lights danced, the dark sky slowly brightened in the distance.

The moon slid along its path, clouds gathered and drifted apart, and stars rained down like a shower.

Listening to Serenadeโ€™s soft breathing as she slept, I watched the ever-changing view outsideโ€”

And before I knew it, I too had fallen asleep.

โ€ฆ

โ€ฆI had a long dream.

A very long, wonderful dream.

โ€œโ€ฆHuh?โ€

Waking from a light sleep, I looked around in surprise.

The once-busy scenery outside the window had come to a stop.

And the thin blanket Iโ€™d laid over Serenade was now draped over my shoulders.

It was probably just before dawn.

Startled, I looked aroundโ€”and at some point, Serenade had moved from the bed and was now sitting across from me.

โ€œSerenade, are you okay? When did you wake up?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€

Even when I asked, Serenade simply gazed out the window with a clear, unwavering stare.

I asked her again, gently.

โ€œSerenade?โ€

โ€œMy lord.โ€

Only then did Serenade turn to me with a faint smile.

โ€œIt feelsโ€ฆ like Iโ€™ve just woken from a very long sleep.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€

โ€œAnd it feels like I had a really good dreamโ€ฆ Did you, too, my lord?โ€

I smiled softly.

โ€œYeah.โ€

I slowly reached out and took Serenadeโ€™s cool hand in mine.

โ€œIt felt like a very long, very beautiful dream.โ€

We sat together in silence for a while, looking out the window.

Under the slowly brightening sky of dawn, the familiar city glowed faintly in the distance.

โ€œSerenade.โ€

I suddenly asked.

โ€œAt the end of this roadโ€ฆ what kind of future do you hope weโ€™ll have?โ€

โ€œHmmโ€ฆโ€

Serenade lowered her gaze in thought for a moment, then spoke.

โ€œA lot of stories end like this. โ€˜And they lived happily ever afterโ€™โ€ฆโ€

โ€œRight.โ€

โ€œBut life isnโ€™t so easily summed up.โ€

She smiled softly.

โ€œWe wonโ€™t always be happy.โ€

There will be times when misfortune finds us, uninvited.

โ€œIt probably wonโ€™t be forever either.โ€

We wonโ€™t live eternallyโ€”weโ€™ll be fleeting.

โ€œAnd our version of a โ€˜good lifeโ€™ might look very different from what others expect.โ€

Sometimes, we might have to turn our backs on the values everyone else chases.

โ€œWe might break apart again. Maybe more than once.โ€

We could fail over and overโ€ฆ and find ourselves rebuilding on ruins.

โ€œBut.โ€

Serenade paused briefly to breathe.

โ€œEven so, itโ€™s okay.โ€

She whispered, full of certainty.

โ€œBecause that tooโ€ฆ is life.โ€

I closed my eyes tightly for a moment, then opened them again, feeling a warmth behind them.

โ€œAnd itโ€™s beautiful.โ€

Slowly, we kissed.

So gently, and so dearly.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€

With our foreheads pressed together after the kiss, feeling each otherโ€™s warmth,

I met Serenadeโ€™s silver eyes as they slowly fluttered closed and smiled.

โ€œYeah. Whatever shape it takes, itโ€™ll be okay.โ€

I, too, spoke with certainty.

โ€œWeโ€™re going to live a beautiful life.โ€

The End.
